Traditional breast augmentations, also called “boob jobs,” add volume to the breasts by surgically placing a silicone or saline implant into the breast pocket.
After breast augmentation surgery, you should expect three days of full downtime and relative downtime for at least two weeks. You can expect pain, swelling, and sensitivity for a few weeks, but it should subside enough within the first few days to allow you to return to most of your activities without significant discomfort.
There are many factors that go into choosing the right size breast implant. These can include:
- Your body size and shape
- Your desired breast augmentation look and size
- The amount of breast tissue you currently have
- Your lifestyle
You should discuss your options with your surgeon, but ultimately, this is a very personal decision that only you can make.
There is no link between breast implants and breast cancer. A common complication of breast enlargement with implant is capsular contracture. Choosing an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon to perform your procedure is critical in reducing this risk.
Breast implants can be placed to minimize any interference with breastfeeding, however, any surgery on the breast you can potentially affect its functionality.
During this cosmetic surgery, your surgeon inserts your implants through the areola, nipple sensitivity is always a risk during any kind of surgery in this area, and any time you do surgery on the breast you can potentially affect its functionality, which includes sensitivity.
Breast implants can last anywhere from 10-20 years, however Dr. Barrett (and the FDA) recommend replacing your breast implants every 10 years.
There are many different types of implants that can be used to achieve your breast goals. Saline breast implants are filled with saline and are typically the cheapest option. Silicone implants are filled with silicone gel and give a more natural look and feel. Gummy bear implants are made of a cohesive silicone gel, preventing silicone leaking in instances of implant rupture.
