What is breast augmentation surgery?
Breast augmentation refers to any surgical procedure that enhances the shape, size, and look of the breasts. Many options exist for reaching a patient’s unique body goals, from implants and fat transfers to reductions and lifts.
How do I know what size breast implant is right for me?
Choosing implants is a very personal and subjective choice, but plastic surgeons are trained to provide options based on a patient’s needs and what looks best for their specific body dimensions. The surgeon performs a physical exam during the initial consultation to understand the patient’s goals while providing realistic expectations for results.

Should I wait until I have children to have a breast augmentation?
While some medical professionals recommend waiting until the patient is finished child-rearing to have certain procedures, as pregnancy can drastically change the body, breast augmentation is possible before or after having kids. Some patients may desire revisions after pregnancy and breastfeeding. Breast augmentation does not prevent future breastfeeding but can potentially cause issues.
How long do breast implants last?
Implants typically last 10 to 15 years, making them a great time and financial investment. The FDA and manufacturers recommend replacing implants after around a decade with regular monitoring and mammograms between replacements.
How long is recovery from a breast augmentation?
The initial downtime for most breast augmentations is around four days, with patients returning to non-strenuous work within a week. Patients experience swelling and soreness in the first few days and must avoid rigorous exercise and upper body activities for six weeks.
Should I get silicone implants or saline implants?
Both silicone and saline are FDA-approved substances with a history of safe surgical outcomes. While choosing a material for implants is ultimately up to the patient’s preference, it’s important to know the difference in options. Saline implants are silicone shells filled with saline solution to the desired size. Silicone implants are made entirely of silicone and are filled to specific sizes before the surgeon implants them.
There are pros and cons to both options — saline implants are safe for patients as young as 18, and the body can safely absorb saline in case of rupture, while silicone implants feel more natural and have higher durability than saline.
Dr. Barrett typically recommends gummy bear silicone implants, which feature a tear-drop shape for the most natural look with the lowest risk of complications, as the cohesive silicone prevents leakage in the case of rupture.
Will my nipple sensation or feeling change?
Nipple sensitivity is always a risk during breast augmentation as the surgeon inserts implants via the areola. Finding a qualified and board certified plastic surgeon with a reputation for high patient satisfaction is the best way to reduce the chance of complications.
Will breast augmentation increase my risk of breast cancer or other health compliations?
There is no link between breast implants and breast cancer. Although rare, the most common complication of breast enlargement with implants is capsular contracture.
